First of its kind facility where Girl Scouts across OC will explore diverse careers,be inspired to embrace STEM education, and learn to take action to change the world—all while enjoying waterfront activities and creating lifelong memories
IRVINE, Calif. (March 7, 2016) Girl Scouts of Orange County announced that construction has begun on the Girl Scout Leadership Center; a 6,100 sq. ft. facility in Newport Beach’s Marina Park scheduled to open in early 2017. The Leadership Center will boldly address the shortage of female leaders by providing Orange County’s more than 21,000 Girl Scouts and nearly 15,000 volunteers and adult members a state-of-the-art interactive learning environment.
Featuring two large program areas separated by a spacious atrium with views to the bay, the Girl Scout Leadership Center will be a destination where girls across Orange County embrace challenges and expand their world by exploring 21st century careers, understanding the role STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) plays in all careers, and learning how to take action that has sustainable impact-- all while having fun and creating lifelong memories.
The facility will be available to Girl Scouts across Orange County through a reservation system and feature Girl Scouts of Orange County’s signature, multimedia program experience called INSPIRE. Designed by Boston Productions, Inc. in collaboration with Girl Scouts of Orange County, INSPIRE is designed to fuel girls’ passion for STEM in fun and engaging ways as they explore diverse careers and learn to “take action” that leads to sustainable solutions to issues in their community.
Girl Scouts visiting the Leadership Center can apply their learning from INSPIRE as they explore the Balboa Peninsula. They can also enjoy kayaking, sailing and other activities. Girls can even prepare s’mores on the 2,000 sq. ft. patio as the sun sets over the ocean. Returning home, girls will continue their career exploration and take action initiatives in their communities.
“It’s a very special time for Orange County Girls Scouts! The Girl Scout Leadership Center will offer innovative and life-changing experiences girls won’t find anywhere else to embrace STEM education, explore 21st century careers, expand their capabilities, and create lasting memories,” said Nancy Nygren, CEO of Girl Scouts of Orange County.
Notification in early January from the City of Newport Beach confirming that construction of other Marina Park facilities was complete has now opened the door for construction to begin on the Girl Scout Leadership Center.
Following a competitive bid process, Girl Scouts of Orange County selected Ontario, CA-based Perera Construction & Design, Inc. to build the Girl Scout Leadership Center. Perera will be responsible for construction of the new building, site utilities, and site improvements, including hardscape, landscape planting, irrigation and more. Project management is being handled by Newport Beach, CA-based AndersonPenna Partners, Inc.
The Girl Scout Leadership Center is pursuing LEED certification with the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and will reduce or eliminate negative impacts through market-leading design, construction and operation practices.
