Leading OC STEM companies join forces to develop innovative workshop series for girls to explore STEM and tap into their entrepreneurial spirit
Girl Scouts of Orange County, in partnership with the Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium, announced today the launch of STEM Tank, an innovative and exciting new workshop series designed to get 8th-12th grade girls exploring STEM in their future while developing important business and presentation skills. Inspired by the popular television series Shark Tank, STEM Tank provides older Girl Scouts with special opportunities to interact with and learn from local OC STEM professionals and companies as they practice being entrepreneurs themselves.
Highlighting the impetus for creation of STEM Tank, Girl Scouts of Orange County CEO Vikki Shepp shared, “While women hold nearly half of all US jobs, we account for only 24 percent of STEM jobs. If the US is going to keep up with the increasing demand for STEM-educated workers, we must increase the number of women working in STEM fields. Girl Scouts is accomplishing this by nurturing girls’ natural interest in STEM at every age level. Through vital programs like STEM Tank, girls learn how they can use STEM to help their community, improve their world, and build a brighter future for us all.”
STEM Tank officially kicks off at the Argyros Girl Scout Leadership Center in Newport Beach on Sunday, April 15. Following the Kick Off, girls will participate in a series of workshops hosted by STEM Consortium member companies throughout April and May, including titles such as Technical Sales Know How (Western Digital & Ingram Micro), The Insider’s Guide to Valuation (PAAMCO), and Design Thinking (Capital Group). The series will culminate with Pitch Day on May 15 at PAAMCO headquarters in Irvine. On Pitch Day, girls will present a pitch (individually or in a small group) to a panel of STEM pros, sharing a solution to an issue they care about. Following their pitch, participants will receive feedback and inspiration from the professionals. The entire series (6+ hours of entrepreneurial development) is provided at a cost of only $10 per girl and all participants will receive a special STEM Tank series patch.
Reflecting on the importance of STEM Tank, Putri Pasqualy of STEM Consortium member company PAAMCO said, “What makes STEM Tank truly unique and so important is that the workshops are taught by STEM professionals on site at local OC STEM Companies. Just when girls are beginning to think about future career possibilities, STEM Tank provides them with opportunities to meet working STEM professionals, learn about STEM companies in Orange County, and develop skills needed for careers in STEM."
STEM Tank is part of the Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium’s plan to make STEM accessible to 20,000 Girl Scouts across Orange County and tap into unique STEM experiences that our community’s STEM leaders have to offer. Launched in 2015, the Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium’s previous collaborations have included the development of two Girl Scouts of Orange County badges, My STEM Life for Girl Scout Cadettes (grades 6-8) and STEMsational Me! for Girl Scout Juniors (grades 4-5).
