Monday, August 6, 2018: 5:00PM Thank you to all of our camp families for keeping our beloved Camp Scherman in your thoughts and sending us positive messages and words of encouragement through social media, email, and calls. We are happy to share that the Cranston Fire is now 96% contained, the air quality is good, and power has been fully restored. We will be able to continue with our Weekend and Family Camp as planned, including all of our traditional camp activities. Staff were up at Scherman last week getting camp ready, the horses have returned, and the pool is ready for you. Weekend Camps begin August 17th and Family Camp is Labor Day Weekend August 31 – September 3. We look forward to seeing you at camp!

A huge thanks to Riverside Emergency Management, US Forest Service, CAL FIRE and CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department for their tremendous efforts to keep our camp safe and get the fire under control.

Monday, July 30, 2018: 6:00PM The Cranston Fire is now 57% contained and officials have lifted the evacuation for areas around Camp Scherman. We hear that air quality at camp is “pretty good.” Camp staff plan to return to Camp Scherman on Thursday to clean up the camp areas (given the abrupt departure of campers forced by the evacuation last Wednesday night) and collect their personal belongings.

Power at camp has been on and off sporadically and repairs are being made. Due to the power issue (and out of an abundance of caution), this week’s camp session remains cancelled. We anticipate being able to resume camp for our upcoming weekend and family camp sessions, beginning August 17-18, and will make a final decision that we communicate to our membership on August 7.

Monday, July 30, 2018: 2:25PM Thank you to all of our camp families for keeping our beloved camp in your thoughts. We continue to get good news from the local fire authorities. Camp Scherman is standing strong and evacuation orders were recently lifted in our area. As of the last update, the Cranston fire is 57% contained. While Session 5 remains canceled, we anticipate that our upcoming Weekend and Family Camps will be able to proceed as planned, and we will provide you an update on Tuesday, August 7. A huge thanks to Riverside Emergency Management, CAL FIRE and CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department for their tremendous efforts to keep our camp safe and get the fire under control. Our thoughts continue to be with the entire Idyllwild community and families impacted by the fire.

Friday, July 27, 2018: 9:45AM Dear Camp Families, Camp Scherman and the immediate area remain under mandatory evacuation by order of the Riverside Office of Emergency Management. Out of an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to temporarily close Camp Scherman and cancel our upcoming camp session, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, July 30.  We will be sending out an email communication and calling all families of impacted campers today with more details, including information about refunds. We appreciate your understanding.

At this time we have not made a decision about Weekend Camps in August. We will be in contact with the Riverside Office of Emergency Management and will post updates to girlscoutsoc.org/campupdate as we receive them.

Our first priority is always the safety of our girls. If you have an urgent matter and need to contact someone immediately, please call 949-461-8800 and follow the prompts to contact Camp to be connected to support staff.

Thursday, July 26, 2018: 3:27AM Thank you to all parents for their patience as staff worked to coordinate the safe return this morning of all Camp Scherman campers. Parents will receive an additional communication in a few hours, during business hours, regarding how to arrange for the pick up of any camper luggage that may not have made it home with campers as well as any additional updates or information we may have at that time. If parents still have questions or concerns after the receipt of the email or phone call, we will provide follow up contact information at that time.

Wednesday, July 25, 2018: 6:18PM  We want to provide another update this evening addressing the Cranston Fire. We have been in contact with the local fire captain. The fire continues to burn, but Camp Scherman is not currently in its path. Air quality at Camp Scherman remains at a healthy level and we will continue to monitor. Camp staff and campers are aware of the fire, but they understand that camp is not in danger at this time. Campers are participating in evening activities and settling down for the night. We will monitor the fire throughout the night and post updates as we receive them to this page.

In the event that we do need to evacuate, parents of current session campers will be notified by phone.

Wednesday, July 25, 2018: 3:49PM This afternoon the Cranston Fire broke out in the town of Mountain Center. While smoke can be seen from camp, the fire is not in the direct vicinity and our campers are not in any danger. We are continuing with afternoon programming and working with CalFire to stay updated on the fire’s progression.

If your camper was attending the Take a Hike session, her group was on a hike this afternoon and she is currently being safely routed back to camp through the city of Banning.

In the event of an evacuation, our camp bus service is prepared and on standby. We will post this update to our website and continue to keep you apprised of any news.
