**********************CAMP SCHERMAN UPDATE**********************
This is an update on the status of the Mountain Fire in the Idylwild area.
7/29/13, 1:00 pm: We are pleased to share that Camp Scherman survived the Mountain Fire thanks to our amazing facilities crew and the brave firefighters. Troop Camp (Aug 1-4), weekend camps, and family camp will still be held as scheduled.
7/22/13, 5:00 pm: Thank you all for sending your positive thoughts (and singing camp songs) for Camp Scherman! The conditions continue to improve at camp and the Mountain Fire has not damaged Camp Scherman. We did voluntarily evacuate the camp last week and all girls and staff made it home safely. We are cancelling the last two sessions of resident camp as we proceed with cleanup around camp and monitor air and water quality – parents of these campers have been notified. At this time, things look good for Troop Camp (Aug 1-4), weekend camps and family camp; a final decision will be made later this week.
Many, many thanks to the truly heroic efforts of our facilities and camp team in going above and beyond, working with local authorities and firefighters to protect our camp! We were even able to help our firefighters use resources wisely! Helicopters drew water from our lake for water drops and teams of firefighters used our camp to take showers, get some sleep and even ate from our kitchen. Help us thank these incredible firefighters for their amazing efforts by posting a photo of your girls or your troop (in Girl Scout uniforms or Camp Scherman shirts) with a thank you sign to our facebook page (be sure to tag Orange County Fire, Corona Fire Dept, City of Riverside Fire, Cal Fire, Los Angeles County Fire Department, Idyllwild Mountain Fire Net) or by emailing a thank you video to marcom@GirlSCoutsOC.org. We will compile the photos and videos into a message for these brave men and women! We encourage you to proudly wear a Camp Scherman shirt this week as we celebrate our beloved camp!
7/18/13, 3:30 pm: Due to the Mountain Fire, we have made the decision to cancel all remaining 2013 resident camps at Camp Scherman, which were originally scheduled to run through July 31. All campers and staff have been safely evacuated from camp. Parents of campers in canceled sessions are being contacted and will received full or partial refunds based on the duration of your camper’s stay. Refunds will be issued in the same form of payment that was originally used (credit card will be refunded or a check will be mailed). We appreciate your understanding – our first priority is always the safety of the girls in our programs. If you have any questions regarding refunds, please contact Sarah Wagner-Thomas at SThomas@girlscoutsoc.org. Any press inquiries should be directed to Emilie Perkins at (714) 747-5854 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
7/17/13, 3:00 pm: If you are a parent of a camper in an upcoming Camp Scherman session, we would like to update you on the current situation with the Mountain Fire in the Idyllwild area. Although evacuations were not mandatory as of yesterday morning, out of an abundance of caution, we made the decision to bring all campers and staff that were currently at Camp Scherman back to Orange County. With camper safety as our primary concern, we will continue to evaluate the conditions and will notify you of any cancellations of upcoming camps as soon as possible and no later than Saturday, July 20. If your camp is cancelled, refunds or credits to future camps will be available. If you have any questions, please call our office at (949) 461-8800.
7/16/13, 1:45 pm: All campers and staff returned to Orange County safely. Thank you to all of those involved in making their safe return a success. Partial refunds or credits will be available, full details will be emailed to parents. We will continue to evaluate the conditions and will notify campers that are scheduled to attend upcoming camps of any schedule changes by Saturday, July 20.
7/16/13, 9:30 am: Good morning. All campers and staff are safe and out of danger. Although evacuations are not mandatory, due to the possibility of air quality worsening from the Mountain Fire and out of an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to bring all campers and staff back to Orange County this afternoon. We are currently notifying parents of campers and asking them to pick up their campers at The Village of Orange mall parking lot at 2:00 pm today, campers are scheduled to arrive shortly after. Parents should not plan to drive to Camp Scherman to pick up their daughters as the Riverside County Fire Department has notified us that there are road closures. Partial refunds or credits will be available, full details will be emailed to parents. We will continue to evaluate the conditions and will notify campers that are scheduled to attend upcoming camps of any schedule changes by Saturday, July 20. If you have any questions, please call our office at (949) 461-8800.
7/15/13, 5:50 pm: We are aware that there is currently a fire near Idyllwild. All campers at Camp Scherman are safe and there is no immediate threat. We have been in communication with the Riverside County Fire Department and they have advised us that there is no need to evacuate the camp at this time. We are closely monitoring the fire and will remain in close communication with the fire department. We have an evacuation plan in place and we have sufficient staff and vehicles at camp to evacuate if that becomes necessary. We will continue to monitor the situation and you may check this webpage for ongoing updates regarding the situation.
